As part of the continuous commitment of OSM Thome Maritime Leaders Academy in upgrading the competency of our seafarers, the training center has recently invested in a PIVOT ROV Expert, an Observation Class ROV identical to those commonly found on vessels to be used for our ROV Training Program. This equipment will significantly enhance the practical experience of our trainees and provide them with an authentic and relevant training environment.

Integrating Observation Class ROVs into our curriculum offers numerous benefits, effectively bridging the gap between theory and practical application. These accessible ROVs serve as an excellent foundation before students’ progress to larger, more complex work-class systems.
Our foundational skill development focuses on basic piloting techniques, including control inputs, navigation, precise depth and heading control, and basic maneuvering, without the complexities of work-class ROVs. Repetitive exercises with these ROVs dramatically improve crucial hand-eye coordination and refine spatial awareness, enabling students to understand ROV movement in 3D underwater spaces and the influence of currents.

Safety is paramount. Our trainees can learn and make mistakes confidently in a low-risk environment, where potential damage is minimal compared to larger systems. We can also dedicate more focus to reinforcing safe operational procedures, pre-dive checks, and emergency responses without the high stakes of a live offshore setting. Our program provides an in-depth understanding of ROV systems. Trainees gain hands-on experience with core components like thrusters, cameras, lights, tethers, and control units. The simpler design of these ROVs is ideal for teaching essential preventive maintenance, fault finding, and repair skills vital for ROV Pilot Technicians.
Furthermore, we emphasize data collection and interpretation proficiency. Trainees learn to accurately interpret live video and sonar feeds for navigation, object identification, data recording, and logging. They also practice fundamental inspection techniques relevant to entry-level ROV positions.
Ultimately, Observation Class ROV training provides an ideal progressive learning pathway. Once proficiency is achieved, the transition to advanced simulators and work-class ROVs becomes significantly smoother and more effective, building on deeply ingrained fundamental skills. These ROVs Observation Class provide a practical, safe, and affordable foundation for a successful career in underwater robotics.
