STANDING STRONG FOR A HARASSMENT-FREE SHIP
By: Julia Anastasiou, Chief Crew Management Officer, OSM Thome

Each year, the International Day of the Seafarer gives us a moment to pause and reflect—not only on the dedication and sacrifices of those at sea, but also on the kind of workplace we’re shaping for them. This year’s theme, “My Harassment-Free Ship,” is a powerful reminder of the responsibility we all carry: to ensure that every ship is a place of safety, dignity, and respect.
At OSM Thome, this responsibility is not taken lightly. We recognise that harassment and discrimination—whether subtle or overt—erode the very core of trust onboard. That is why we have put concrete systems in place to actively prevent and address these issues. Our onboard training programs ensure that every crew member understands what respectful conduct means and how to identify, report, and challenge inappropriate behaviour. These sessions go beyond compliance — they are about building a culture of inclusion, where everyone feels safe to speak up.
We are especially proud of the Women’s Desk we have established within our Crew Management team—a dedicated space offering confidential guidance and support for our female seafarers. This initiative reflects our commitment to addressing the unique challenges women face at sea and making sure that concerns are met not with silence, but with action.
Beyond this, we maintain confidential reporting channels and support systems that are readily accessible to all crew. These allow our seafarers to raise issues without fear of retaliation. Our leadership—both ashore and onboard—are trained to respond quickly and with empathy, guided by clear protocols and a deep understanding of the impact such incidents can have.
We also listen. Regular check-ins, open feedback loops, and a culture that encourages communication are all part of how we monitor and reinforce the well-being of our people. Because respect at sea should not be conditional—it should be foundational.
To every seafarer sailing under the OSM Thome banner: know that we stand with you. If you are ever in doubt, if you feel unsafe or unheard—reach out. You are not alone, and we will act.
Creating a harassment-free ship is not just a campaign—it is our collective commitment. Let us carry this message not only in our words, but in our daily actions, our leadership, and the way we treat one another at sea.
SAFEGUARDING SEAFARERS: The Role of Shipowners, Managers, and Operators
By: Tommy Olofsen, Chief Marine Services Officer
![]()
This year’s International Day of the Seafarer comes with an important reminder of the industry’s duty of care, as the IMO calls for “My Harassment-Free Ship.”
While the theme rightfully highlights the need for dignity and respect at sea, it also speaks to a broader truth: that the safety, rights, and welfare of seafarers must remain a collective priority. And central to that responsibility is the role of shipowners, managers, and operators working together.
Seafarers make global trade possible, moving more than 80% of the world’s goods. But beyond their professional contributions, they are individuals navigating isolation, fatigue, and the many personal sacrifices that come with life at sea. It’s our job, not just as companies, but as an industry, to ensure their journey is not only safe, but humane and respectful.
The structure of modern maritime operations creates a natural division of responsibilities. Shipowners provide the physical vessels and dictate much of the long-term strategy, investment in onboard living conditions, and access to healthcare.
Managers handle the crewing, compliance, and day-to-day vessel support—forming a close connection with seafarers as they deliver training, monitor welfare, and respond to issues onboard.
Operators shape the commercial rhythm through voyage schedules, turnaround times, and port calls, which in turn affect rest hours, stress levels, and the overall experience on board.
These roles may be different, but they are not disconnected. In fact, when they work together with a shared understanding of their impact on seafarers’ lives, the results are transformative. From improved mental health and job satisfaction to reduced incidents and better retention, the benefits of coordinated care extend far beyond the crew as they shape the sustainability and reputation of the entire operation.
Leadership also plays a critical role in this equation. At OSM Thome, we believe leadership must exist at all levels—onboard, ashore, and throughout the organisation. That means experienced leaders have a responsibility not only to manage but to mentor, coach, and guide the next generation. Developing our people is not optional; it’s essential. Our Cadet programs are a prime example—designed not just to train but to shape the future leaders of ship management. Because the best way to safeguard tomorrow’s seafarers is by investing in strong, values-driven leadership today.
But leadership must also respond to the realities we face. According to the International Transport Workers’ Federation, seafarer abandonment reached an all-time high in 2024, with over 3,000 crew members left stranded without support. Meanwhile, surveys continue to show that harassment, wage delays, and lack of communication still persist across parts of the industry. These are not isolated incidents; they are signals that more must be done.
At OSM Thome, we believe seafarer welfare must be proactive, not reactive. That’s why we prioritise direct employment, invest in our own training centres, provide access to 24/7 medical support through our partner clinics, and maintain an open feedback culture both onboard and ashore.
Across every layer of our operations, we aim to build a safe and respectful environment—one where every seafarer knows they are valued and protected.
On the International Day of the Seafarer, let us reflect not only on the challenges but on the opportunity we have as owners, managers, and operators to lead by example and to create an environment where dignity is a standard, not a slogan; where crew welfare isn’t dependent on luck or flag state, but guaranteed by united, consistent action.
Sustainable shipping begins with safe, supported, and respected seafarers. The course is clear. Let’s sail it, together.
WHAT WE OWE OUR CREW: A look at Seafarer Welfare Beyond the Basics
By: Dorthe Karlsen, Recruitment Director, OSM Thome

Each year, the International Day of the Seafarer reminds us to reflect—not only on the contribution of our crew but on the responsibility, we carry as an organization. In recruitment, this responsibility begins long before a contract is signed. It starts with trust, and it must be upheld at every stage of the journey.
This year’s theme, “My Harassment-Free Ship,” underscores that crew welfare cannot be limited to physical safety and technical compliance. It must be holistic, human-centered, and consistent—from first interview to final disembarkation.
At OSM Thome, we owe them safe and respectful workplaces—where professionalism and protection are guaranteed. Our recruitment practices are anchored in transparency, fairness, and a zero-tolerance approach to illegal fees or unethical intermediaries. Seafarers deserve clarity and respect—not only in how they are hired but in how they are welcomed into our organization.
Once onboard, that responsibility deepens. Our onboarding programs go beyond policy introductions. They set the tone for the onboard culture we expect—one of accountability, inclusivity, and leadership grounded in respect. We prepare our officers to model this through active training, reinforced expectations, and regular engagement.
We owe them support that goes beyond the contract—emotional, mental, and practical. This means ensuring crew have access to communication, welfare channels, and a clear process for raising concerns, no matter where they are in the world. Our Crew Management teams work closely with Welfare and Medical to provide real-time, real-life support—not just policy on paper.
Through the OSM Thome Maritime Leaders Academy (MLA), we provide seafarers with structured training pathways for professional advancement. Career development is not just a benefit—it’s a responsibility. We owe them a future—with opportunities to grow, lead, and shape their careers meaningfully.
And ultimately, we owe them dignity—in every interaction, every decision, and every promise we keep. That’s what defines true crew welfare. Not slogans or statements—but actions, systems, and standards that reflect the value of the people who make this industry move.
Crew welfare isn’t a one-time commitment. It is the foundation of responsible ship management—and we intend to protect and strengthen that foundation every step of the way.
FROM SEA TO SHORE: A Seafarer’s Full-Circle Journey
By: Dominique Mae Malaya, Content Marketing Specialist

In the ever-evolving world of maritime, some stories stand out for their quiet strength, deep purpose, and inspiring full-circle journeys. One such story is that of Capt. Alfredo Ibarbia, a man whose 25-year career at sea has transformed into a meaningful life ashore, now dedicated to training and empowering the next generation of seafarers at OSM Thome’s Maritime Leaders Academy (MLA).
Capt. Ibarbia’s seafaring journey began in the early 1990s and he joined Thome as a cadet —at a time when the shipping industry was far simpler. “There were no cadet programs, less port state control inspection, and commercial pressure was low,” he recalls. But while the systems were less complex, support for cadets was also limited. With few resources, he relied on determination and curiosity to learn, observing senior officers and teaching himself the ropes. Even as a young cadet, he was already clear about his goal: to one day become a captain.
That clarity guided his journey through the ranks finally becoming Master. Along the way, he received recognition as “Master of the Year” for Thome-managed vessels—an achievement that reflected not just his skills, but his steady growth and leadership. “I’ve always believed in doing the work, learning constantly, and supporting those around me,” he says. These values shaped a leadership style that is flexible, collaborative, and grounded in real-life experience—one that he now shares with aspiring seafarers.
Even while actively sailing, Capt. Ibarbia made time to teach during shore leave. “It wasn’t about the money,” he says, smiling. “It was about passing on what I had learned. I knew I wanted to continue helping others even after my time at sea.” That passion for mentorship made the transition to shore-based work feel like a natural next step rather than a dramatic shift. “I understood how office operations worked, because we were already doing something similar on board.”
Today, Capt. Ibarbia is Learning and Development Manager at the MLA, and his years of hands-on experience continue to make a difference. “Young seafarers see that I’ve been where they are. That connection matters. I bring both technical knowledge and real-world stories they can relate to.”

Today, Capt. Ibarbia is Learning and Development Manager at the MLA, and his years of hands-on experience continue to make a difference. “Young seafarers see that I’ve been where they are. That connection matters. I bring both technical knowledge and real-world stories they can relate to.”
His time at sea, working with diverse crews, handling onboard challenges, and leading through uncertainty, has given him a unique ability to adapt, understand people, and support growth. “It taught me how to work with different personalities, cultures, and ages. That’s helped me not just as a captain, but now as a mentor.”
To those considering life beyond the sea, Capt. Ibarbia offers this advice: “Plan ahead and always keep learning. There’s a future after sailing, and it can be just as rewarding. If you stay focused on your goals and put in the work, you can create that next chapter for yourself.”
Capt. Ibarbia’s story is one of purpose, generosity, and quiet confidence. It’s a reminder that a maritime career doesn’t have to end when life at sea does. With heart and preparation, it can grow into something even more meaningful—one that leaves a lasting impact on the people who follow.

SEAFARING AS A CALLING: Why Young People Still Choose Life at Sea
By: OSM Thome Editorial

In a world that’s rapidly changing, the sea remains a constant—demanding, vast, and filled with promise. For Third Officers Yen P. Caguete and Oleksii Bilobrov, seafaring is not just a career; it is a calling that reflects personal grit, growth, and a deep connection to purpose.
Following the Tide of Inspiration
3O Yen P. Caguete’s story begins in childhood, listening to tales of her father’s life at sea. “Knowing that he told me how hard it was, yet as a woman fuelled by courage and driven by challenges, I see it as an adventure towards success,” she shares. That early exposure shaped her view of seafaring not just as a profession but a legacy to continue—and elevate.
For 3O Oleksii Bilobrov, the dream started with a fascination for travel and motion. “Stories shared by relatives and friends who worked at sea inspired me,” he recalls. Choosing to pursue maritime studies at the Odessa Maritime Academy, he found that the unique combination of adventure, duty, and connection to a global workforce was exactly where he belonged.
More Than a Job: Growth On Board
Both officers find deep fulfillment in the dynamic life onboard. Oleksii notes the significance of real-world responsibilities: “As a Third Officer, I’m trusted with duties that impact the safety and efficiency of the ship. That gives me a sense of purpose.” Meanwhile, Yen reflects on the personal empowerment she’s experienced. “Sailing taught me confidence, clarity, and purpose I never expected. What’s fulfilling is knowing that women can do far more than imagined.”
Their stories highlight that the rewards of seafaring extend beyond financial or professional gains. It’s about the continuous journey of self-discovery, leadership, and cross-cultural collaboration.
Weathering Distance with Resilience
Life at sea is not without sacrifices. Both Yen and Oleksii admit that separation from loved ones is one of the hardest parts of the job. “Their love and support are the beacons that guide me,” says Yen. She finds comfort in camaraderie, whether through karaoke nights, movie marathons, or simply treating everyone on board with dignity. Oleksii keeps himself grounded by focusing on long-term goals and staying connected digitally when possible: “Every contract brings me closer to financial independence.”
Learning with Every Voyage
With each passing contract, both officers witness their transformation. “Professionally, every voyage teaches me something new,” Oleksii shares—from emergencies to dealing with port authorities. For Yen, the transition from cadet to officer has been both challenging and rewarding: “My cadetship gave me not just technical knowledge, but also the understanding to act decisively and responsibly.”
They’ve grown into professionals who value responsibility, communication, and humility—qualities essential both on board and in life.
To the Next Generation: A Message of Encouragement
When asked what they’d tell aspiring seafarers, both officers offer honest, motivating words. “Go for it—but be prepared,” Oleksii advises. “If you’re willing to work hard and push your limits, the sea can shape you into a stronger version of yourself.”
Yen speaks directly to young women eyeing the maritime path: “Yes, the maritime industry can be demanding, but it also offers opportunities for growth and adventure. Let the ocean challenge you—and let it shape you.”
In their voices, we hear the future of shipping: resilient, purpose-driven, and inclusive. As they chart their course across oceans, they also pave the way for a new wave of seafarers ready to rise.

END-TO-END SHIP MANAGEMENT: What Sets Us Apart?
By: Somenath Moitra, VP, Sales & Commercial

In today’s dynamic maritime industry, ship management extends beyond routine operations, requiring an integrated approach to ensure safety, efficiency, and regulatory compliance. Effective ship management encompasses a wide range of services, from crew and technical management to compliance, procurement, and sustainability initiatives. Understanding the essential elements that contribute to a well-managed vessel helps shipowners and operators achieve optimal performance while maintaining industry standards.
- Crew and Technical Management
A vessel’s efficiency is largely determined by the expertise and preparedness of its crew. Skilled seafarers undergo rigorous training, continuous education, and career development programs to ensure they can handle the complexities of modern maritime operations. Crew management also involves strategic recruitment and retention efforts to secure highly competent personnel. On the technical side, proactive maintenance, real-time diagnostics, and advanced performance monitoring reduce downtime and extend the operational lifespan of vessels. Efficient technical management plays a crucial role in ensuring that ships remain seaworthy and operate at peak performance.
- Compliance and Safety Standards
The maritime industry operates under stringent regulations, making compliance a critical aspect of ship management. Adherence to international laws, such as the International Safety Management (ISM) Code and classification society standards, ensures the safety of vessels, crew, and the environment. Regular inspections, audits, and risk assessments help maintain compliance with evolving regulations. A safety culture, supported by comprehensive training programs and emergency preparedness, minimiszes operational risks and enhances the overall security of maritime activities.
- Data-Driven Efficiency and Sustainable Practices
The integration of digital technologies and data analytics is transforming ship management by optimiszing fuel consumption, improving operational transparency, and reducing costs. Automated systems and real-time monitoring enable shipowners to make informed decisions that enhance efficiency. Sustainability is another crucial factor, as environmental regulations continue to evolve. Energy-efficient technologies, emissions reduction strategies, and adherence to green shipping practices contribute to minimsizing the environmental impact of maritime operations. Implementing sustainable solutions not only ensures regulatory compliance but also enhances long-term profitability and operational resilience.
End-to-end ship management is essential for maintaining safe, compliant, and efficient maritime operations. By combining skilled personnel, regulatory adherence, and innovative technologies, shipowners can enhance the performance and longevity of their vessels while meeting industry expectations. A well-structured ship management strategy ensures reliability, cost-effectiveness, and sustainability in an ever-evolving global shipping landscape.
IMO Net-Zero Framework: Global Incentive to Reduce Carbon Emissions
By: Pia Meling, Managing Director of Evigo

Evigo is OSM Thome’s specialised business unit for Vessel Performance and Sustainability.
We are pleased to provide a brief update on the recent regulatory developments from the IMO related to carbon emissions from ships.
IMO’s Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 83) concluded in April with a new chapter in MARPOL Annex VI, introducing goal-based marine fuel standards and Greenhouse Gas (GHG) intensity limits.
There was much debate among the member states over this new regulation; 16 states (the Gulf states, Russia, Iran, Venezuela and others) voted against the proposal and the US lobbied against it although they were absent from the meeting. It was however approved by a positive voting by 63 states, including EU countries, China, India and Brazil. Formal adoption is expected in October this year, requiring acceptance by 2/3 of the parties and representing at least 50% of the total gross tonnage.
If adopted, the amendment will enter into force in March 2027, and take effect from 2028. The framework has a technical element of a gradually more stringent reduction of a ship’s annual GHG fuel intensity (similarly to FuelEU) and an economic element with a two-tiered pricing of GHG emissions.
The two-tiered pricing of GHG emissions can (for simplicity) be compared to speeding fines for cars: you get a lower penalty for exceeding the speed limit with a certain speed and a larger penalty if exceeded at higher speed.
Exceeding emissions above tier 1level will give a penalty rate of $100 per tonne of CO2 equivalent (CO2e) and emissions exceeding the higher tier 2 level will be penalised at a rate of $380 per tonne CO2e.
Ships that achieve better-than-target performance can accumulate Surplus Units which can be banked, traded, or used to offset future deficits.
Conclusion
Regulatory complexity and overlap (IMO vs. EU) will increase and understanding your emissions data will be critical. Energy efficiency improvements and low-carbon fuel readiness remain important and Evigo are ready to support our clients with identifying and implementing solutions that keep them compliant and competitive.

STRENGTHENING OUR TRAINING CULTURE TO EMPOWER OUR SEAFARER
By: Devesh Gautam, Director for Training

“Training is not just about compliance—it’s about preparing our people to act confidently, think critically, and contribute safely. At OSM Thome, we see training as a proactive investment in our crew and our future.”
At OSM Thome, our dedication to “Leading Excellence at Sea” is reflected in how we train and prepare our people. Ensuring consistency in training quality across multiple regions is not just a logistical goal—it’s a strategic commitment to safety, performance, and professional growth.
Our training programs are built around a centrally managed curriculum. Standardiszed and approved course content is shared globally to ensure every session—regardless of location—meets the same high standards. These programs are continuously reviewed and refined, incorporating seafarer feedback and industry developments to keep them relevant and impactful.
We’ve also embraced digital learning as a key enabler. Our Learning Management System (LMS) allows seafarers to learn at their own pace—whether onboard, or on leave. Courses are mapped based on rank and vessel type, providing role-specific learning journeys. The mobile app and offline functionality offer additional flexibility, making quality training accessible from virtually anywhere.
Recognising that we cannot be specialists in every subject, we’ve partnered with experts for specific training needs. These partnerships allow us to deliver targeted, high-quality programs in niche areas and across different regions.
Our ‘Maritime Leaders Academy’ in Manila is a cornerstone of our training infrastructure, equipped with simulators, workshops, and classrooms. To extend our reach beyond borders, our experienced instructors conduct live online sessions—enabling access to training when and where it’s needed most.
In alignment with our vision of achieving zero accidents, we work closely with other departments to ensure training acts as a preventive measure, not just a corrective one.
By combining standardisation, technology, and global collaboration, we continue to strengthen our training culture—empowering seafarers and shaping a safer tomorrow.
OSM Thome and Our Harassment-Free Ships
By: OSM Thome Editorial
This is what a harassment-free ship looks like—through the eyes of our seafarers. To mark the Day of the Seafarer, we share real words from our crew at sea—testimonies that affirm the importance of a safe, respectful, and inclusive working environment for all. In support of the IMO’s 2025 theme and its focus on the campaign, “My Harassment-Free Ship”, we stand with seafarers in building a workplace defined by dignity and trust.

“A harassment-free ship for me is when you can feel that you’re also home even if you’re away from your family. It is a very effective way to keep your mind and body calm and healthy. This is very important for crew wellbeing because if the ship’s environment is toxic or unmanageable then your motivation will rapidly go down which will also cause a lot of stress and unfortunate things.”’

“To me, a harassment-free ship means an environment where everyone on board feels safe, respected, and valued, regardless of their rank, nationality, gender, or any other characteristic. It means there’s zero tolerance for any form of bullying, discrimination, verbal abuse, or unwanted physical contact. It’s a place where open communication is encouraged and where individuals feel comfortable reporting any incidents without fear of retaliation.”

“I’ve been working on the FPSO Cidade de Vitória for nearly five years. We have a great environment onboard, where respect, friendship, and camaraderie prevail. I often say we are like a second family here because we know we can rely on each other when something isn’t right. I believe everyone feels comfortable and welcome onboard.”

“We have a safe, inclusive, and respectful environment onboard. It is crucial for crew wellbeing and operational efficiency. Several practices and behaviors contribute to this positive atmosphere, promoting respect and equality.”
We are proud to foster a working environment where seafarers feel protected, empowered, and valued—not just in words, but in action.
Because when seafarers feel safe, they can thrive. When they thrive, the industry moves forward.

FROM SHIP TO STREAM: How OSM Thome is Shaping Digital Engagement
By: Xanthos Neofytou, BD & Marketing Director

In today’s fast-moving digital world, connection is everything, especially in the maritime industry, where seafarers spend long periods away from shore and community. At OSM Thome, we believe that meaningful engagement starts by understanding what our people truly value: simplicity, clarity, and authenticity.
That’s why our focus is not on broadcasting messages, but on creating seamless digital experiences that genuinely support seafarers throughout their journey with us, from the first moment of interest to life onboard and beyond.
Through our recruiting platform, we’ve simplified how maritime professionals explore opportunities and express interest in joining our global team. It’s not about pushing campaigns, it’s about removing barriers and ensuring that those seeking meaningful work can do so with ease, trust, and confidence.
Beyond recruitment, we are continuously reinventing the onboarding journey, and from the moment someone joins, they’re supported by intuitive internal platforms and digital tools that simplify processes, reduce complexity, and enable smoother transitions into their new roles.
Our integrated marketing and communications ecosystem ensures consistency and accessibility across touchpoints, whether through public-facing channels or internal communications. Through smart use of digital tools, we support not only engagement but also alignment, transparency, and efficiency across the organisation.
At the heart of our strategy is our belief in authentic storytelling. Whether it’s through engaging narratives, real-life insights shared by our crew, or visual content that reflects the energy and team spirit onboard, we aim to reflect the true spirit of OSM Thome. These aren’t just touchpoints, they’re windows into the daily lives and shared values of our people.
We are building a community, a tribe with a vibe. One where seafarers can relate, connect, and feel seen. By spotlighting voices from the fleet, we offer a space for dialogue, support, and shared experiences that go beyond job roles and into culture and purpose.
Digital engagement also empowers our corporate communications and thought leadership efforts, ensuring that the voices of our leaders are heard. Through blogs, video features, and expert commentary, we’re contributing to industry conversations while reinforcing the values that guide us.
Emerging technologies such as AI now allow us to make this even more accessible and tailored. A growing number of our internal reports and leadership articles are now available in podcast format, an intentional shift to save time for our audience, whether they’re at sea, in the office, or in transit. We want to ensure they can stay connected and informed, while focusing more of their energy on the things that matter most to them and to our industry.
Ultimately, our goal is not just to communicate, but to connect. To ensure that everyone who interacts with OSM Thome, whether at sea or ashore, feels part of something bigger. This is how we foster engagement that lasts, not by noise, but by making people’s journeys smoother, more intuitive, and truly meaningful.
SeaCura Has Set Sail – Redefining Crew P&I for Today’s Seafarers
By Karla Monica Ceñido, Business Development Manager, Maritime Insurance Services, SeaCura

In a bold step toward reimagining seafarer welfare, OSM Thome proudly introduces SeaCura—a purpose-built crew welfare program that goes far beyond traditional crew insurance. More than a rebranding effort, SeaCura represents a long-term vision for crew care. It’s designed not just to provide protection, but to deliver proactive, meaningful support for the health, safety, and dignity of seafarers and their families through every stage of their journey, at sea and ashore. At its core, SeaCura also seeks to elevate the perception of seafaring as a viable, sustainable, and respected career path.
“SeaCura was born from a simple yet powerful belief—that caring for our crew should be proactive, not reactive,” shares Tommy Rekdal, Managing Director of SeaCura. “We’re here to provide more than just insurance coverage; we’re here to offer real care that reflects the realities seafarers face today.”

The name SeaCura itself is a thoughtful blend of “Sea” and “Cura,” the Latin word for care. It represents the heart of the initiative: to prioritize the well-being of crew not just onboard, but also between contracts and at home with their families. SeaCura is not just a program—it’s a commitment to redefine responsible, people-centric ship management.
Launched in response to the increasingly complex landscape of global shipping, SeaCura directly addresses the modern-day challenges faced by both seafarers and shipowners. From heightened awareness of mental health following the COVID-19 pandemic to growing expectations around family support, the needs of today’s seafarers have evolved. At the same time, shipowners must navigate cost pressures, crew shortages, and rising expectations from stakeholders regarding responsible employment practices.
SeaCura is the answer to these needs. It is a people-first solution, developed with empathy, insight, and operational experience. It offers shipowners a practical tool to boost retention, reduce turnover, and improve claims performance. For crew, it brings peace of mind, knowing that they and their loved ones are covered and cared for—even when they are not onboard.

What makes SeaCura truly powerful is its backing. Through a strong partnership with GARD, one of the most respected names in global marine insurance, and OSM Thome’s deep maritime experience, SeaCura delivers a seamless and scalable solution. This integrated offering includes medical and welfare protection that goes beyond sea service, in-house claims handling for quicker response, and optional dependent coverage for added security.
“At its core, SeaCura is about trust and collaboration—between shipowners, their crew, and their partners,” says Rekdal. “By combining strong insurance capabilities with operational insight, we’ve created a solution that not only supports crew welfare but also delivers tangible business value.”
The benefits are clear. Shipowners who subscribe to SeaCura experience improved P&I performance, greater predictability in cost planning, and stronger crew morale. Retention rates improve as seafarers feel recognized and supported. Reporting and documentation become more efficient, while the human aspect of seafaring is brought to the forefront.
But SeaCura isn’t stopping there. This is just the beginning. In the coming months, the program will roll out enhancements that include expanded mental health support, telemedicine access, and digital platforms for tracking claims and benefits. Additionally, it will strengthen integration with other Marine Services within OSM Thome—such as catering, training, and welfare programs—to build a full-circle ecosystem of care.
Another distinguishing feature of SeaCura is its collaborative approach. GARD will continue to participate in crew feedback surveys and officer seminars, helping to shape the direction of the program based on real-world experiences. This allows SeaCura to remain agile, responsive, and relevant in an ever-changing industry.
Ultimately, SeaCura is reshaping how we view crew insurance. It’s no longer just a cost of doing business. It’s an investment in people. A welfare-centric program like SeaCura supports long-term sustainability in crewing operations and reinforces OSM Thome’s ambition to be the Employer of Choice in the maritime industry.
With SeaCura, the message is clear: crew care isn’t just an add-on. It’s a strategy, a value, and a promise.

A TRIP DOWN TO MEMORY LANE: Revisiting the Journeys of OSM Thome Seafarers
By: OSM Thome Editorial

There’s a quiet kind of pride in seeing how far one has come. For many seafarers, the journey from cadet to senior officer is not only about years served, but also about lessons learned, milestones reached, and time spent navigating both sea and self.
In OSM Thome’s photo series, seafarers were invited to share images from their earliest days at sea alongside more recent snapshots. The result is a striking collection of timelines—personal records of growth, transformation, and endurance.
Some photos show fresh-faced cadets in newly pressed uniforms, standing on deck with equal parts nerves and ambition. Others capture the same individuals today, now with years of experience behind them, guiding crews and vessels with calm assurance. The contrast speaks volumes. Not just in age or rank, but in the depth of knowledge earned through years of service.
For many, participating in the series was a moment of reflection. Looking back became a way to honour the distance travelled, not just geographically, but professionally and personally. Several shared that OSM Thome had remained a steady presence throughout their careers, providing opportunities for development and a strong foundation for growth.
Beyond nostalgia, this initiative serves as a reminder of the value of continuity in an ever-evolving industry. These stories offer perspective and show that seafaring is not only about movement, but about commitment. Progress isn’t always dramatic—it often builds quietly, voyage after voyage.
And for those just starting out, these “Then and Now” journeys offer something more. They reveal what’s possible, and what it means to stay the course. Because every seafarer’s story begins somewhere, and each path is worth remembering.
NORWAY: A Blend of Breath-Taking Scenery and Culture
By: Amalie Strøm, Key Accounts & Strategy Officer

Norway is a destination that offers a unique blend of breathtaking nature, deep-rooted traditions, and cultural treasures. From the dramatic fjords and towering mountains to the charming coastal archipelagos and massive glaciers such as Jostedalsbreen, the country’s landscape is nothing short of spectacular. Lofoten, with its jagged peaks rising from the sea, is a must-see for nature lovers and photographers alike. In summer, witness the midnight sun; in winter, chase the northern lights across snow-covered landscapes.
For thrill-seekers, Norway offers unforgettable outdoor adventures. Try the via ferrata in Loen, an exhilarating climb along fixed ropes and ladders, surrounded by towering mountains and views of the icy blue Nordfjord far below. Or experience a safari at Dovre, where you can observe mighty musk oxen in the wild, roaming the rugged highlands of Dovrefjell.
Norway is a constitutional monarchy, and the Royal Palace in Oslo (Norway’s capital) is an iconic site worth visiting. Its elegant grounds and ceremonial guards reflect the nation’s respect for its royal history.
Norway’s cultural heritage is deeply rooted in both tradition and mythology. Norrøn mytologi (Norse mythology) continues to captivate visitors, with gods like Odin, Thor, and Freya once believed to rule the skies, seas, and forests. You can still feel echoes of these legends in the dramatic landscapes and in historic sites, from Viking burial grounds to carved dragon heads on stave churches. Historic stavkirker (stave churches) offer a fascinating look into medieval architecture and craftsmanship.
One of Norway’s living traditions is the Bunad, a traditional costume worn with pride during national celebrations. These garments represent regional identity and history, and seeing them on Constitution Day is a memorable cultural experience.
For food enthusiasts, Norway offers a blend of traditional and modern cuisine. While “Norwegian taco” is a surprisingly popular Friday night meal, traditional dishes such as smalahove (sheep’s head) and kjøttkaker i brun saus (meatballs in brown sauce) offer a true taste of Norwegian culture.
Whether you’re seeking adventure, mythology, or serene natural beauty, Norway will leave a lasting impression on every traveller.

GAME FACE ON: OSM Thome Employees Bring Their A-Game Beyond the Office
By: OSM Thome Editorial

At OSM Thome, the values that drive our people: discipline, commitment, and resilience, don’t end with the workday. Across our global offices and vessels, many of our employees pursue athletic passions that challenge both body and mind. From running and basketball to martial arts and cycling, sports have become a powerful extension of how our people live out excellence in every aspect of their lives.
Sports are more than just recreation; they are reflections of character. Training for a marathon, enduring the rigour of contact sports, or maintaining the consistency needed for swimming or cycling all demand a strong mindset. These same qualities define the way OSM Thome employees approach their roles: with a drive to improve, a focus on teamwork, and a respect for structure and discipline. In both work and sport, success comes from preparation, perseverance, and trust in your team.
In this feature, we highlight some of our colleagues who exemplify this commitment. Their achievements outside the office are testaments to the values we uphold as a company—showing that our strength lies not just in what we do, but in how we do it.
- Jomar Tuazon – Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioner with medals from national tournaments
- Josip Karakasic – Hallf-marathon finisher
- Toni Morovic – Swimmer, competed at Wings for Life World Run
Whether it’s navigating waves at sea or running laps on land, OSM Thome employees consistently embody endurance and dedication. These pursuits serve as reminders that excellence extends beyond the workplace, it’s a mindset that carries over into how we live, move, and inspire others. With every game, race, and training session, they bring their full selves, proving that when the game face is on, greatness follows.

Pets Ahoy: Furry Friends Behind the OSM Thome Family
By: OSM Thome Editorial

Behind every dedicated OSM Thome team member is a strong support system — and for many of us, that includes a beloved pet. Whether it’s a loyal dog waiting by the door, a curious cat weaving between our legs during video calls, or even a parrot with a personality of its own, these furry (and not-so-furry) companions bring balance, warmth, and joy to our daily lives.
At sea or on shore, the demands of maritime work can be intense. Long hours, high levels of responsibility, and extended time away from family are all part of the job. But for those with pets at home, there’s a special comfort in knowing that someone is always waiting — a steady source of companionship who offers love without condition and presence without demand.
In our special feature, “Pets Ahoy: Furry Friends Behind the OSM Thome Family,” we celebrate these unsung heroes — the quiet comforters, the mid-day motivators, and the ever-loyal companions who stand behind the people who keep global shipping moving. From dogs with boundless energy to cats with quiet grace, birds with cheerful melodies, and even fish or reptiles with calming presence, each one adds something unique to the rhythm of daily life.

“Caring for animals goes far beyond just feeding and sheltering them—it reflects our compassion, values, and sense of responsibility,” shares Anna Marie Soliman, Senior Corporate Communication & Marketing Manager. “All my cats are rescues, and each one reminds me of the joy and healing that comes from giving animals a second chance. I also make it a point to care for community cats in my neighborhood, many of whom rely on small, consistent acts of kindness to survive. Whether it’s through adoption, rescue, or simply showing daily care, how we treat animals says a great deal about who we are. Advocacy starts in the everyday. Through responsible pet ownership and compassion in action, we help build a more humane and caring world—for all creatures, great and small.”
These glimpses into the personal lives of our colleagues remind us that well-being comes in many forms — and that joy often comes with four paws, feathers, or fins. At OSM Thome, we believe in nurturing the whole person, and that includes celebrating the quiet joys that pets bring to our lives.
To all those who shared their stories and snapshots — thank you for letting us meet the extended OSM Thome family. And to our furry companions: thank you for standing by our side, one tail wag or purr at a time.
WHY IS REGULAR CHECK-UP OUR HEALTH’S BEST FRIEND?
By: Dr. Rowena ” Weng” Dimayuga, Nordic Medical Clinic Physician

“Doctor, what are my chances? My kids are still young. My wife is a full-time housewife. I am the only one they can lean on.” These heartbreaking words came from a 52-year-old man admitted to the ICU after a heart attack. With a history of hypertension and diabetes, inconsistent medication compliance, and no regular check-ups aside from work-related medical exams, his story echoes a common pattern: waiting until symptoms worsen before seeking medical care.
In the Philippines, routine health check-ups are often viewed as formalities rather than a proactive investment in well-being. Many only seek medical help when symptoms become unbearable—or avoid it altogether out of fear of a diagnosis. But health is not just the absence of disease; it’s a complete state of physical, mental, emotional, and social well-being. And maintaining it starts with prevention.
Ischemic heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the Philippines, followed by cancer, stroke, pneumonia, and diabetes. These “silent killers”—lifestyle-related conditions such as heart disease, hypertension, and diabetes—often show no symptoms until significant organ damage has occurred.

This is why regular check-ups are crucial:
- Promotion of Holistic Health
Annual physicals provide a personalized roadmap for wellness, taking into account not just physical health, but also mental health, sleep, stress, lifestyle, and habits like diet or smoking.
- Prevention and Management of Chronic Conditions
Routine exams help assess risks based on personal and family history and monitor existing conditions like blood pressure or diabetes, enabling timely adjustments to treatment and avoiding complications.
- Early Detection for Effective Treatment
Early diagnosis is often the difference between a manageable condition and a life-threatening one. Screenings—such as for cancer, heart disease, or chronic infections—catch problems before symptoms even appear.
Regular check-ups should be personalized, age-appropriate, and include routine screenings such as blood pressure, lab tests, cancer screenings, and more.
Ultimately, health is a personal responsibility. Regular check-ups empower individuals to make informed decisions, improve quality of life, and secure their future and that of their families.

A DECADE OF IMPACT: OSM Thome AD Foundation Marks 10 Years of Service
By: OSM Thome Editorial

In far-flung communities across the Philippines, where opportunity is often out of reach, the OSM Thome AD Foundation has spent the past ten years turning hope into action. Established in 2015, the Foundation was built on a clear and compassionate mission: to help communities—especially schools, underprivileged children, youth, and their families—overcome barriers that stand in the way of education and development.
As it celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, the Foundation reflects not only on a decade of achievements, but on the unwavering commitment to continue empowering lives, one initiative at a time.

Investing in Potential: Holistic Scholarships for the Indigent Youth
At the heart of the Foundation’s work is its scholarship program—a beacon of hope for underprivileged yet high-potential youth. Carefully selected through a fair and thorough review process, each scholar is given access to quality education while being guided in personal growth, leadership, and values formation.
These students are not just sent to school; they are nurtured to become capable, compassionate leaders—empowered to give back to their families, communities, and country.

Uplifting Education in Remote Areas
Education is a right, not a privilege. Yet in many remote and underserved areas, schools continue to face persistent challenges—from a lack of resources to geographic isolation.
Through its Initiatives for Social Development Program, the Foundation works hand-in-hand with these communities to identify needs and implement tailored projects—ranging from school supplies and teacher support to the renovation of learning spaces. Each effort is rooted in collaboration and focused on achieving sustainable improvements in learning outcomes.

Responding with Care in Times of Crisis
When disasters strike, the impact on already vulnerable communities can be devastating. Through its Disaster Response Program, the Foundation provides immediate relief and ongoing support to schools, students, and families affected by calamities.
This includes targeted assistance for the families of seafarers—especially when the seafarer is onboard and unable to assist their loved ones. In these moments of hardship, the Foundation steps in as a source of stability and care, helping communities recover with dignity and hope.

Looking Ahead: A Commitment That Continues
The Foundation’s work is guided by the vision and dedication of OSM Thome’s leadership. Their consistent support has enabled the Foundation to grow—not just in reach, but in purpose.
What began as a small initiative has evolved into a dynamic force for good, impacting thousands of lives over the past decade. And the mission is far from over.
As the OSM Thome AD Foundation moves forward, it remains deeply committed to extending its reach to the most underserved areas, ensuring that every project continues to create meaningful, lasting change.
Because with every life uplifted and every community strengthened, we move closer to the world we believe in—one where no child is left behind, and every family has a fair chance at a better future.
